Grenoble’s international airport is ideally located in the middle of Rhône-Alpes, 45 kilometers from Grenoble and 85 kilometers from Lyon. It takes 30 minutes to get to Grenoble and 50 minutes to get to Lyon. Every year the region welcomes several million tourists, many of whom are traveling to one of the many ski resorts. On the business side, many industrial and advanced technology firms are located in the Grenoble area. The airport handled 474,083 passengers in 2008. The airport was originally built for the 1968 Winter Olympics - Rhône-Alpes has hosted the Games on three occasions, in Chamonix, Grenoble and Albertville. For a long time it was managed by the local authority. In December 2003 its management was entrusted to the Lyon Chamber of Commerce. A new terminal building was officially opened in October 2002, with capacity of up to a million passengers and a high level of security. It represents an overall investment of €7.8m funded by the Rhône-Alpes Regional Council, the Isère Departmental Council and the French government. In particular the airport has a 3,050 meter runway on which all types of aircraft can land, up to Boeing 747-400s. Its 45,000 sq m terminal apron can accommodate seven Boeing 737s at the same time. It offers services and facilities that comply with the most recent standards. Located in a non-residential area the airport is not subject to any serious environmental constraints. There is a regular service to the bus station in Grenoble, connecting to services to local ski resorts and other regional centers. On the spot passengers will find all the necessary amenities: car rental, cash dispensers, bar and restaurant, newsstand and bookshop, duty free sales.
